homestudy

Our homestudy is completed. This is were a social worker came to our house and reviewed our history to write a report to the Ethiopian government proving we are worthy parents. I thought it was going to be painful and long. I thought I would have to answer questions about why my sister and I don't get a long too well. How sometimes we do spank our kids. But no, he didn't ask any scary questions at all.
So now we have one big hurdle out of the way...which leads me to a question I need some feedback about. We are hoping to adopt five year old twin girls, whose names are Megre and Megritu. Ariel and I would like to rename them..but are quite hesitant. What do you think? Is it completely innappropriate to rename five year olds with American names? We would definitely keep their original names as middle names. What do you think?

What if you let them decide? They can definitely keep their Ethiopian names, but once they got here and became more Americanized, they could pick their own names. That way there wouldn't be too much change at once. Of course, they could also pick silly child-like names that you wouldn't like at all. I really have no idea.

Hey there. I'm a friend of Margret's. I work in an elementary school as the registrar. We have several kids from Korea/China/Japan who use an American name even though they are legally still their Korean/Chinese/Japanese names. My favorite was the little guy (1st grade) who came in several years ago w/ his parents. He was Min-Kyu that day but when he started class he would be either Mike or Tiger. :-) Despite Tiger Woods' win at Augusta, Min-Kyu became Mike.

So, I guess I'm saying that whether the girls have their names changed legally or not, the opportunity to choose from among names you like could be really cool for them. I also remember my parents asking for my input when my baby sister was born. I don't know if she's named whatever I chose, but I remember the thrill of being asked!

I agree! I think they're old enough to decide. Chances are they'll want to fit in ...
Luckily "Meg" is a nice way to shorten at least one of them!
